Town of Ladysmith cancels Mackie Dam removal until 2025

The Town of Ladysmith was set to start decommissioning the Mackie Dam this month after BC Dam Safety recommended its removal.  Now it won’t happen until 2025, that’s according to a media release from the town saying it’s all to protect salmon spawning in Holland Creek.  They say that the decision to postpone it was due to “new information from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans” showing the timing posed a threat to salmon in the creek.  “While the risk of dam failure remains, it is not imminent therefore protection of fish spawning is the higher priority,” reads the release. The North Loop of the Holland Creek/Heart Lake Trail slated to be closed to the public will remain open until work starts next summer.  The decommissioning is estimated to cost $600,000 and is part of a larger project to remove 3 weirs along Holland Creek.  The post Town of Ladysmith cancels Mackie Dam removal until 2025 appeared first on My Cowichan Valley Now.
