21 local governments get extra time to amend zoning bylaws

21 local governments will get more time to amend zoning bylaws. That comes from the BC government, announcing that they are giving these governments extensions to not only amend the bylaws but also to upgrade infrastructure for their community. They say this comes after setting new requirements for governments to fix outdated zoning and build more capacity for row homes, triplexes, and townhouses. “Local governments were required to make changes to zoning bylaws by June 30, 2024, to allow either a minimum of one secondary suite or detached accessory dwelling unit, a minimum of three to four dwelling units, or a minimum of six dwelling units near bus stops with frequent transit service," said the province. “Communities were able to request an extension on adopting the legislation beyond the June 30 deadline for parts, or all, of their community where the requirements apply, depending on need.” They say those who applied had to show that they’re upgrading infrastructure that services either one area, or a lot of areas in the community. They hope by giving these extensions, local governments have more time to comply with newer actions to allow more housing options for those in need. Of the 21 governments, only three got extensions on Vancouver Island. Those three are Comox, Ladysmith, and the Sunshine Coast Regional District.
