Water flows down Campbell River set to increase this weekend

With spawning salmon starting to return, BC Hydro is planning to increase water flows in the Campbell River as early as this Sunday. The utility will increase the flows in pulses, for 48 hours each week from Tuesday to Thursday, for the next nine weeks. Flows will reach up to 65 cubic metres per second, and the public is asked to be careful while walking and fishing in the area and to stay away from the upstream side of Elk Falls as well as the wider canyon area. Temporary signs will be in place. The goal is to provide good spawning habitat for salmon up to Elk Falls. BC Hydro hopes to increase the water flows to 80 in October and hopefully to 100 in November for returning Chinook.
