Winners: N500k Festive Challenge 2024

The winners of 500k for our #FestiveChallenge have emerged following another wonderful peer review session. Children Of The Light by Salimat Atere, a beautifully narrated tale highlighting the perils of FGM won the prize for fiction. Mrs Costley by Collins Undelikwo is a well-crafted reflection of the multitasking characteristic of many African mothers. It won the prize for nonfiction.  Chronicles_Of_African_Childhood_Memories_And_Friendships by Chukwuemeka Oluka takes you down memory lane with typical Nigerianised expressions to win the prize for poetry. Below is a breakdown of the nominations from the 7 writers who attended. FICTION (200k) Children Of The Light by Salimat Atere received 4 nominations from Becky, Victor, Emmanuel and Cmoni. Seyitan by Victor Oladejo had 2 nominations from Salimat and Collins. Unblinded by Emmanuel Enaku got 1 nomination from Chukwuemeka. Gobsmacked by Chukwuemeka Oluka received worthy commendations. NONFICTION (200K) Mrs Costley by Collins Undelikwo received 4 nominations from Becky, Victor, Emmanuel and Cmoni. Memoirs Of A Language Tutor by Becky O. Peleowo got 3 nominations from Chukwuemeka, Salimat and Collins. POETRY (100K) Chronicles_Of_African_Childhood_Memories_And_Friendships by Chukwuemeka Oluka had 4 nominations from Victor, Salimat, Collins and Cmoni. Love, Crush And The Shades Between by Becky O. Peleowo received 2 nominations from Chukwuemeka and Emmanuel. All Things Broken by Collins Undelikwo got 1 nomination from Becky. All the participants acknowledged that this was a tough but worthwhile challenge. You can feel the growth in confidence as many writers continue to push beyond what is usually their preferred genre. I congratulate everyone for making the effort including those whose works didn’t qualify. There will always be another opportunity in the lifelong journey of learning. I also thank the readers and my good friend Kene Okoludo for his generous financial support. Happy Christmas and a peaceful new year.
