Campfires to be prohibited starting Friday

Starting this Friday, campfires will be prohibited on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. That comes from BC Wildfire Service, saying campfires will be prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre to prevent human-caused wildfires and to protect public safety. They say the ban applies to all public and private land within the Centre, unless stated otherwise in a local government bylaw. This comes after category 2 and 3 open fires were prohibited in May this year. While campfires are banned, the ban doesn’t include outdoor stoves as they are used for cooking, heat, or ambiance and have a flame height of less than 15 centimeters. The service adds the ban will be in place starting at 12 p.m. on July 12, lasting until October 31 this year, or until the order has been removed. For a map at the areas affected, click here.
