Servonauts – Review

Ever thought fueling vehicles could be fun? You’ll surely think so after playing this game! Servonauts is a local co-op party game available on Steam and Nintendo Switch. The game lets you (and possibly your friends) be in control of little astronaut-like characters. Your task is to make sure the vehicles that arrive receive the right type of fuel. Sounds easy enough, right? Think again! You need to fuel the vehicles at a high-speed rate if you want to keep your customers happy and this while also conquering certain obstacles on four unlockable planets. Servonauts is a game you might have doubted at the start but once you really give it a chance and the fuel gets going, it’s a game that becomes hard to let go of. Story Storywise there’s not much to say. The game is a simple yet challenging and fun co-op party game that is ideal to play at a cozy get-together with friends. There’s no deep or meaningful storyline and there’s little character design and no background stories or anything like that at all. Yet, when you first start the game, a little origin story disguised as a comic pops up and explains the origin of the so-called Servonauts. This is a nice addition to the game, of course, but it doesn’t add much meaning. Graphics The graphics of the game are surprisingly good. The title screen may give you another impression at first but that feeling fades away once the actual levels begin. The planets you unlock all have their own characteristics. For example, one planet is desert-themed and another is more sci-fi-themed. Additionally, every level situated on these planets has a different design and, to be honest, it just looks good and colorful. Next, the way your character moves across the platforms happens really smoothly. Except maybe for when you fall off the platform. If that happens, there’s no way back, so you basically have to jump into the void of outer space to make your character spawn onto the platform again. This may sound frustrating but it honestly just adds up to the fun. All of the unlockable planets have a unique vibe to them and all of the levels have their own unique design. The gameplay is varied, smooth, and plays nicely once you figure out the controls. Sound Let’s talk about the soundtrack! Besides background music during the levels, there isn’t much to say about the sound here. The game has background music playing during the levels and those tunes actually fit each landscape of the four planets. Thus, as each world looks different, they all have different tunes. For example, the desert-like planet mentioned before will have you fueling vehicles while country-like music plays in the background. The music adds to the vibe of the game and since the melodies are upbeat and fun it’s actually hard to sit still while you’re playing.  Gameplay Servonauts is a party game in which little astronauts roam outer space and visit four different planets where they fuel the vehicles of their customers. However, it’s not as simple as it sounds. The game makes you do this in a fun and challenging way. There’s plenty of fun puzzle elements to it. First of all, there are three types of fuel: red, blue, and yellow. Of course, not all customers are that easy to please. Sometimes it’s necessary to mix them up. That’s where the challenging aspects come to the surface. Each of the four planets you unlock while playing has its own unique environment and with each environment come different obstacles. In addition, each level has its own puzzle element which adds to the variety of the game. These puzzle elements vary from breakable floor tiles to moving platforms that can only change direction by hitting a button. All of these make the game a lot more challenging and way less monotone. The gameplay might feel a bit stiff at the start of the first level since the game doesn’t explain the controls very well. It’s up to you to find them in the game’s menu. It takes time getting used to these controls whether or not you look for them or try to figure them out by yourself. This might lead to some frustrations. However, once you figure out how the game works, the real fun begins.  In conclusion, the gameplay is where the strength of Servonauts lies. All of these different puzzle elements and obstacles make the game a lot of fun to play with friends but the developers ensured solo play is also possible. Conclusion Despite the lack of a storyline, this game stands out for its challenging puzzle elements, its variety of playable levels, and its catchy music. The very first time you play this game it might be a tad frustrating since the controls aren’t straightforward and quite hard to master. It takes a while to get used to but those of you who have a sense of patience will soon notice this game has a lot of aspects that make it a whole lot of fun. Little astronauts racing across platforms to fuel vehicles in a puzzly manner? You have to admit it sounds like an amusing time whether it’s just for you or to play together with a bunch of friends. It’s an ideal game to play if you ever need a change of pace or a break from games with heavy storylines.
