Female Police Leaders Unite to Address Security Threats in Africa, Promote Gender-Inclusive Solutions

Its the International Association of Women Police (IAWP) Africa Region Training Conference with 520 delegates from over 18 African countries including Nigeria, Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Liberia, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Niger, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Congo.Declaring the conference open, with the theme “Addressing Africa’s Security Challenges and Safety through Collaboration and Inclusivity” Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi TINUBU ably represented by the wife of the Honourable Minister of Works, Her Excellency Rachel Umahi said that security is the bedrock of development and it is imperative to tackle it with international friends.  She noted that this conference aligned with Mr President's renewed hope agenda to embody our national commitment to revitalise and strengthen our institution to better save our people. The renewed hope agenda also promotes inclusivity, transparency and accountability.  Through this agenda, Nigeria is building a society where every citizen feels safe, valid and empowered. Where enforcement agencies operate with the highest standard of professionalism and integrity. Senator Tinubu commended the IGP Egbetokun for agreeing to host this conference. Since he assumed office in 2023, he has tried to make the Nigeria Police force more gender-responsive in line with the United Nations Security Council of Nations 1025."Significant milestones that highlight the progressive state growth taken toward inclusivity and equality within our law enforcement agencies," she saidShe applauded the International Association of Women Police for choosing Nigeria as a host country for this esteemed conference. She commended the organising committee under the leadership of AIG Aishatu Abubakar Baju for a well-organised conference. In his remarks, the IGP Olukayode Egbetokun said the conference marked a pivotal moment as the force also launched the NIGERIA POLICE FORCE GENDER POLICY. He noted that the conference which brings together outstanding women police officers and law enforcement officials from across Africa and beyond. IGP Egbetokun emphasizes that the conference aimed to strengthen unity,  enhance capabilities and provide invaluable networking opportunities for women in policing within the African region. He added that the aim of the conference is training women police and other security and law enforcement officers and equipping them with the knowledge and skills for battling crimes and security threats in a modern and evolving society, most especially at their various regions on the African Continent"Policing in Africa faces unique challenges from transnational crime, domestic violence and demand approaches but the collective wisdom shared by the women police officers present today will be crucial in crafting effective practical and sensitive solutions. "The International Association of Women in Police plays a vital role globally, empowering and supporting women officers through collaboration and knowledge sharing by providing essential tools and resources the IAWP will excel in their careers and contribute meaningfully to their communities.  He urged them to reaffirm their commitment to promoting gender equality within its forces ensuring equal opportunities for training promotion and decision-making. Enhancing the development and well-being of women officers addresses issues of harassment,  discrimination and violence. Building trust with communities, leveraging women officers in unique roles enforcement community relations,  collaborating regionally to tackle security challenges effectively through shared best practices and concerted efforts. In her goodwill message, the Deputy Secretary -General, United Nations, Her Excellency, Amina Mohammed said the conference will bring standardisation, sharing best practises, coordinating efforts and building and strengthening local capacities in policing in line with strategic guidance framework of international policing. According to her, this approach is exemplified by the Elsie initiative button for women in peacebuilding operations, which helps when the stakes identified and address barriers uniform women may face at home and during deployments. "The focus of this conference on rethinking how to collectively address security threats of today and tomorrow. And I'm confident our joint efforts will lead to significant advancements towards a gender responsive security sector. And increase women's representation in peacekeeping operations and precision's as we head towards the 25th anniversary of the Security Council Resolution 2025 on women, peace and security next year."she stressedEarlier in her welcome address, the Gender Advisor & Chairperson, Central Planning Committee IAWP Africa Region Training Comference 2024, AIG Aishatu Abubakar Baju extends deepest gratitude for invaluable support and contribution received for the success of the IAWP Africa Region Training Conference Abuja 2024.She said the dedication and commitment of participants have played a pivotal role in making this event a resounding success.
