IGP Egbetokun Handsover 20 Rescued Medical Students to Families, Vows to Rescue Other Victims in Captivities

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun has handed over the 27 abducted persons to the families and VCs of both the University of Jos and University of Maiduguri for  rehabilitation before reintegration into the society.The handing over ceremony took place today, Sunday, 25th August 2024 at the Force Headquarters, Abuja in the presence of Vice Chancellor, University of Maiduguri, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, the Vice Chancellor University of Jos, VC Prof Tanko Ishaya, Representative of Benue State Governor, Rep of the Nigeria Medical association, DIG in charge of Operations FHQ, Senior police officers, and families of the rescue victims.Speaking at the handover ceremony, the IGP Egbetokun affirmed that this success was possible through the activation of security intelligence network, synergy with other security agencies, community partnership and the deployment of our highly skilled and tactical officers, whose dedication, bravery, and precision in executing their duties are truly commendable. He noted that during the operation, our officers engaged the kidnappers in a well-coordinated tactical offensive. He said the kingpin of this notorious gang was neutralized during exchange of fire with our operatives and his weapon recovered, while two other members of the gang were arrested. These individuals are currently in police custody, where they are providing valuable information that will help us dismantle their criminal network and prevent future occurrences of such abductions.IGP Egbetokun noted that after President Tinubu gave a marching order to rescue the 20 students, the operation was coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the security agencies, including the police, Department of State Services (DSS) and military personnel, were involved in the operation, with the support of the Benue State government.IGP Egbetokun therefore assured those in captivity of Police efforts to rescue them and never to lose hope. "If we can rescue the 20 Medical students and 27 other victims in captivity, we will also rescue you from your abductors. Keep hope alive.Address Nigerians, the IGP Egbetokun said "Nigerians, particularly the relatives of those who have been victims of such criminal acts. We understand the anxiety and pain that families experience during these trying times. However, we urge you to cooperate with the Police and other security agencies when such situations arise. It is only through cooperation and trust that we can effectively carry out our constitutional mandate of securing lives and property."He assured Nigerians that the Police will remain vigilant. "We will not rest until every citizens go about their businesses.""We remain resolute in our commitment to rid our nation of criminal elements who seek to disrupt the peace and security of our society. The Nigeria Police Force will continue to employ every lawful means at its disposal to protect the lives and property of all Nigerians while strongly determined to ensure that those who choose to engage in criminal activities will be brought to justice."As we continue to advance our efforts in combating crime across the country, I assure you that we will remain vigilant, proactive, and relentless in our pursuit of a safer Nigeria where the security of every Nigerian and residents in our great country is our top priority, and we will not rest until every citizen can go about their daily lives free from fear and intimidation." he addedHe therefore commended the bravery and professionalism of officers, and thanked all the agencies and individuals who contributed to the success of this operation. "Together, we will continue to strive towards a safer, more secure Nigeria."In his remarks, the Second Vice-President , Nigerian Medical Association, Dr Usha Anenga represented by Dr Simon Ogenyi said the NMA excited by the news of the release of the 19 kidnapped students and doctors. "We prayed that this sad occurrence doesn't happen again as we wish our students a speedy recovery from the physically and emotionally traumatizing situation of being in captivity for 8 days."We thank the government and security agencies for their efforts, especially the National Security Adviser, the IG of police and DG DSS. In the same vein, we appreciate the Benue State Governor and the security agencies in the state. We applaud the parents of the abductees for their patience and efforts during this period."As an association, we are concerned about the security of health personnel across the country. We still have doctors in captivity, most notably Dr Ganiyat, who was abducted 8 months ago in Kaduna State.
