The Bolsheviks, predominantly young people, led the Russian Revolution of 1917, overthrowing the Romanov dynasty and establishing a new socialist state. Their goal was not merely reform but a complete systemic overhaul reflecting their ideals of equality and justice.In America, the Libertarians (Liberty Brothers), many of whom were young, significantly impacted the American Revolution. They organized protests against British oppression, fought bravely in the war for independence, and laid the foundation for a global superpower. Similarly, the Jacobins, young radicals in France, led the French Revolution, challenging the absolute monarchy and advocating for equality, which was crucial in establishing a republic.Even in England, the Puritans, many of whom were youth, played a key role in the English Revolution, challenging the monarchy and contributing to the development of a parliamentary democracy. These young revolutionaries were driven by ideals of justice and freedom—principles that should guide Nigerian youth today.### Rejecting Corrupt Systems of the PastNigeria's current state reflects pre-revolutionary conditions seen in other historical contexts. Today, corruption, inequality, and disenfranchisement define Nigeria’s political landscape. The older generations, entrenched in self-serving politics, have perpetuated systems that benefit a few at the expense of the masses. As Chinua Achebe noted, “The trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a failure of leadership.” This leadership failure is rooted in corruption and a lack of vision.The youth must reject these corrupt systems that have dominated Nigeria for decades. They must refuse to perpetuate a cycle of mediocrity where personal gain outweighs national interest. Young Nigerians have the numbers, energy, and creativity to break free from these chains and chart a new course. Nigeria’s history is replete with leaders who, despite promises of change, fell into corruption. The youth must not repeat these mistakes. They must lead with integrity, prioritizing the common good over personal gain. The youth must recognize their pivotal role as Nigeria’s last hope.
