Google introduces feature allowing users change Gmail addresses

Google has introduced a new feature that allows Gmail users to change their email addresses without creating a new account, marking a major shift from the company’s long-standing policy.Details of the update first appeared on Google’s Hindi-language support page, suggesting that the rollout may begin in India ahead of a wider global release.The change ends Gmail’s long-held rule that permanently tied users to the email address chosen at sign-up, a policy that often left users stuck with outdated or informal usernames.Previously, Gmail users who wanted a more professional or updated address had no option but to open an entirely new account, a process that required manually transferring emails and other data.Under the new system, users can replace their existing Gmail address while retaining their account and all associated data, including emails, photos, messages and access to Google services such as Drive, Maps and YouTube.According to Google’s updated support documentation, the original Gmail address will remain active as an alias after the change and will continue to receive messages in the same inbox. Both the old and new addresses will also work for signing into Google services.The company said all existing account content, including emails, contacts, app subscriptions and stored files, will remain intact after the address update, eliminating the need for manual data migration.However, the feature comes with limitations. CNBC reported that users will be allowed to change their Gmail address only once every 12 months, with a maximum of three changes per account, allowing up to four Gmail addresses over the lifetime of an account. Once changed, the new address cannot be deleted within the 12-month period, while the old address cannot be used to open a new account during that time.Google has yet to make a formal global announcement or provide a timeline for worldwide availability. However, the appearance of the feature in support documentation suggests a phased rollout ahead of a broader release.
