MCMC Blocks Over 5000 Gambling Websites Until February 2025

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under the jurisdiction of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) has continuously implemented blocking actions on social media platforms and websites with gambling content. The relevant Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that a total of 5,026 gambling websites on social media platforms have been blocked by MCMC for the period from 2022 to February 1, 2025. Meanwhile, a total of 224,403 gambling content has also been taken down for the same period.Such actions will be continued by MCMC from time to time based on public complaints and monitoring carried out in collaboration with internet service providers and digital platforms. At the same time, it is mandatory for every social media and internet messaging service that has at least eight million registered users to apply for an Application Service Provision License since January 1.Commenting further, Fahim said that the licensing process has received various reactions from the parties involved, with some of them cooperating, but no less than those who gave reasons to delay the process. As far as is known, WeChat, TikTok and Telegram are three providers that have received licenses to operate in the country. Meanwhile, Meta still has no new developments and LinkedIn is in discussions with MCMC for this licensing purpose.
