NST Leader: MH370: A quest for closure

Ocean Infinity’s first search attempt, using the Seabed Contractor, yielded no results after trawling 25,000 sq km in early 2018. The company globally deploys dozens of autonomous oceanic underwater vehicles, equipped with sensors and navigation systems capable of reaching depths of 6,000 metres. The targeted search area includes the Diamantina Trench, a deep zone reaching 7,079 metres. For this search, Ocean Infinity is deploying its deep-water support vessel Armada 7806, equipped with advanced radar technology. The company has demonstrated impressive wreck discoveries from 1915 to 2017, but those recoveries were facilitated by known wreck locations. This is why MH370 will be Ocean Infinity’s true acid test: a successful discovery would result in a US$70 million payout from the Malaysian government, supported by technical assistance from the US National Transportation Safety Board and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. While there is no expectation of finding survivors, Ocean Infinity remains confident in its ability to pinpoint the location of MH370’s wreckage. Nevertheless, the company is acutely aware of critical concerns, including the risk of misinterpreting data analysis and leads, which could skew search pattern conclusions. Additionally, the “no find, no fee” strategy poses a financial risk if search costs escalate due to increased demands for time and resources. While their latest technology is substantial, a second failure could severely damage their global reputation.
