America Wants to Ban Sales of Chinese and Russian Cars

Joe Biden spent his last days as US president by approving several more technology ban orders on China and Russia. Currently, the White House is finalizing an order that will ban the sale of cars with smart features from China and Russia in the United States. In the order to be announced soon, all “connected cars” with hardware and software developed and manufactured by these two countries can no longer be imported. This includes vehicle connectivity systems (VCS) such as Bluetooth, cellular, satellite, and WiFi modules. Also banned are the automated driving systems (ADS) that are now standard features on cars on the market. The software restrictions will take effect for the 2027 model year and the hardware restrictions will take effect for the 2030 model year. The rules also include a ban on the sale of connected cars in the United States by entities owned, controlled by, or subject to the jurisdiction or direction of China or Russia. Therefore, US-made vehicles cannot be sold in the domestic market if they use hardware and software that has ties to China or Russia. The six-year period is seen as giving local automakers time to find new supply chains for the components they use.The directive currently only applies to connected cars, but the White House said it has begun work to extend it to commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses weighing more than 4,500 kilograms. This would prevent BYD from continuing to sell its electric buses, which are now widely used in several major cities in the United States.
