A total of 63,652 fraudulent content on social media was removed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in 2024, said Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Teo Nie Ching. The number shows a significant increase compared to the 6,297 pieces of content removed in 2023. This explains that the public is beginning to show awareness of the importance of verifying information, especially regarding issues that affect daily life. The MCMC also identified fraud, including fraud using fake videos and images or 'deepfake' produced with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. In addition, fraud in the form of competitive returns compared to regular savings has caused many to fall victim to investment fraud schemes. Therefore, it calls on relevant parties such as TikTok and META to increase monitoring efforts following the increase in content, especially online fraud involving harmful AI.
