Buddha Statue Older Than Angkor Wat and Borobodur Temple Found in Kedah

Cambodia has the Angkor Wat complex and Indonesia has the Borobodur Temple. These two thousand-year-old historical relics are tourist attractions and provide a window into the history of our ancestors. Yesterday researchers from the Global Archaeological Research Center (PPAG) research team, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) announced the discovery of a human-sized Buddha statue that is believed to be older than the two historic buildings of this neighboring country.Buddha statue Bukit Choras Archaeological Heritage Site – National Heritage DepartmentThis statue was found at Bukit Choras Archaeological Heritage Site, Yan, Kedah and it is located on the north wall of the Bukit Choras temple. It is made of stucco material and the Buddha is shown sitting cross-legged while meditating. This discovery confirms Bukit Choras was once an important religious site during the eighth to ninth centuriesBuddha statues and excavated artifacts – National Heritage DepartmentResearch was carried out at Bukit Choras between April 21 to May 21 last by a local research team led by Dr Nasha Rodziadi Khaw in collaboration with the National Heritage Department (JWN) and USM. The excavation work revealed the building structure on the north and west walls to clearly show the main structure of Bukit Choras temple. In addition to the Buddha statue, a Sanskrit inscription carved on a stone body and fragments of earthenware pottery were also found.
