Samsung Showcases Screens With Three-Dimensional Pop-Up Surfaces

Three years ago Samsung Display showed a stretchable OLED panel with a surface that protrudes out on the Z axis. At the time it was just a concept showing how a 2D screen could change to give a 3D texture that can be traced by a fingertip. At the IMID 2024 event that took place last week, Samsung Display showed the latest prototype of this stretchable panel. The latest prototype no longer uses an OLED panel but is instead replaced by Micro LED technology. The screen can be stretched up to 1.25X the original length. In the demo video above, the topography of the hill pops out and can be touched. It is not known what use these panels will have in the real world at this point. But a few years ago there was a physical keyboard prototype that emerged to make typing easier. It is also hoped that it can be used by visually impaired people to read Braille letters directly on the screen.
