Fahmi Fadzil: Online Safety Act 2024 Can Improve Consumer Safety
The Dewan Rakyat session yesterday passed the Online Safety Bill (OSB) 2024 after receiving the support of the majority of Members of Parliament through a voice vote. Following that, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that the decision to approve the formation of the act was believed to be able to improve online safety for all Malaysians.Fahmi said the main purpose of the related act being approved was to protect the interests of consumers, as well as to ensure that several safety-related matters, especially those involving children, should be given attention by social media platform providers operating in Malaysia. In addition to not allowing any sensitive issues that cause public concern such as scammer activities and online gambling to operate on their platforms. In fact, he also stressed that the approval of the related act would not restrict freedom of speech, including among young people to criticize.Through the Online Safety Bill (OSB) 2024, any related company must implement proactive measures to reduce the risk of users being exposed to harmful content. In addition, it is also necessary to outline certain guidelines and mechanisms including conditions of use and the correct channels for users.
