The Dewan Rakyat passed the Online Safety Bill (OSB) 2024 after it was debated during its second reading yesterday. The bill was passed by voice vote with more MPs in favor than against. A total of 132 MPs participated in the debate session on the bill, while 90 MPs were absent. It is understood that the main objective of the bill is to reduce cybercrimes such as fraud and online gambling in order to protect users. It will then be focused on service provider companies that will be involved in the licensing process in January next year. Therefore, it is the duty of the parties involved to implement proactive measures to reduce the risk of users being exposed to harmful content. In addition, it is also necessary to outline certain guidelines and mechanisms including conditions of use and the correct channels for users. The government has also previously continued to emphasize to social media platform providers to take action based on the age limit guidelines set, with only those aged 13 and above being able to open accounts on social media platforms.
