Ryan Fraser Goal On Debut Downs Glory

The Wanderers began the post-Stajcic era on a baking hot day in Western Sydney, hoping to win to leapfrog Central Coast and leave the foot of the ladder, new recruit Ryan Fraser was the difference as he scored a stoppage time winner on debut. Under new Interim Coach Gary van Egmond and new assistants Damir Prodanovic & Milos Ninkovic, despite a top 4 defence by goals against, Ruon Tongyik was dropped to the bench with Phillip Cancar set for his first A-League start and only his second appearance after his return to the Wanderers. Jai Rose, Nathan Barrie, Alou Koul and foreign striker Hiroshi Ibusuki were omitted entirely. New signing Ryan Fraser had his transfer certificate clear in time for him to sit on the bench. Aidan Simmons had the best chance of the opening 10 minutes, cutting back from the right wing and firing a half-volley over the bar from 20 yards out. The scorching heat, 40c at kick-off, saw the game require two drinks breaks in the first half. Perth had their first good chance of the game in the 20th minute, Adam Taggart shooting into the chest of Lawrence Thomas from close range after a cross from the right flank. A surprise long range shot from a Tom Lawrence free kick was kept out by Lawrence Thomas at the expense of a corner. From the corner there was a delay as Perth claimed a handball or push, but VAR declined to intervene and the second corner was cleared. The second drinks break came in the 30th minute, the Wanderers having dominated the half thus far but without impacting the scoreboard. The final third flew by with almost no significant action, two teams bullied into a double submission by the oppressive heat. Perth made a double switch at the break, Trent Ostler off for Sebastian Despotovski & Giovanni De Abreu off for Will Freney. Aydan Hammond earned a 47th minute corner after a direct attack down the left, dribbling past Shamoon and Brian Kaltak, only for Kaltak to reappear with a stretching block that deflected the ball out for a corner. Cancar was felled at the far post and the only player within reach of the ball and it flew out for a goal kick. On the hour mark came a triple sub for the home team. Bozhidar Kraev for Steven Ugarkovic, Fraser for Hammond and Joshua Brillante for Borrello. Kraev went up top as the target man and Fraser on the left wing. Kraev finally moved the needle for the Wanderers "shots on target" stat with his 67th minute attempt that Sutton stuck a boot out to save at the near post. Fraser should have had an assist on debut after a pair of strikes followed a deflection that fell to him at the back post. Both were blocked by Kaltak and the rebound was a volley from 6 yards out from Thurgate and with the fans expecting the net to bulge it instead rocketed skyward up and over the bar. Perth then did some tactical time wasting in an attempt to reground and hold back the Red & Black dominance. Stefan Colakovski had rejoined the Glory and he entered in the 78th minute with Nick Pennington benched. Cancar caused a bout of cramp after his long range tester swerved in the air and almost caught Sutton out. Taggart exited for Jaidan Kucharski up from for the Glory, Awan Lual replaced Dylan Scicluna as Bozinovski stopped the game with a yellow card awarding foul. Lual went up top with Kraev stepping back into the attacking midfield area. Lual almost made an instant impact, he reached a deep ball toward the corner easily ahead of the tired defence, Fraser made a great near post run and flicked the cut-back into the goalpost. Lual then got himself on the end of a deep cross, headed back across goal for Kraev where Kaltak's volleyball style jump block was lucky to see the ball smash Kaltak in the head not the raised arms. From the corner the Wanderer smashed the woodwork yet again, this time Lual found enough room to shoot in heavy traffic but it was just too high and crashed out and away. Fraser found open space as the Wanderers stormed home in stoppage time, his signature move appears to be a cutback on his right foot. The shot was hard and curling, Sutton stretched and kept it out. Fraser wasn't denied with his second chance at the corner, Sutton punched straight to Frasfer, his shot was aimed at goal and with a pair of Glory deflections the Wanderers finally broke the deadlock with a debut goal to the Scottish import. The crowd erupted, Fraser running off into the crowd behind the goal. Perth had a chance in the dying seconds, Tom Lawrence going around Cancar and finding space between Gersbach and the cover defence to thread the needle to the back stick only for Colakovski to miss what would have been a tap-in with his desperate lunge. Jarrod Carluccio came on for a time wasting final seconds sub for Kosta Barbarouses, and Fraser won a foul deep in the Glory half to soak up the last moments and secure the 3 points for the Wanderers in a result they deserved after a match they dominated. The Wanderers next match is against Sydney FC on Saturday the 31st of January, at Moore Park with kick-off at 7:35PM.
