Gary van Egmond's honeymoon period as Wanderers coach died with a 4-1 away Derby defeat at the Sydney Football Stadium tonight, with a first minute goal to Ryan Fraser rubbed out by four goals to Sydney FC. The whistle for the opening kick-off had hardly died down before the Wanderers were in front. Sydney FC left an acre of space on their left defensive side, last weeks matchwinner Ryan Fraser found himself one on one with Rhyan Grant and the Scottish attacker beat him all ends up, cutting back onto his right and threading the needle with a curling shot over the top of Grant and into the side netting on the far post to send the huge away support into raptures. Sydney FC equalised in the 9th minute, they broke the Wanderers defensive line with a through ball to Victor Campuzano who couldn't quite out-sprint Anthony Pantazopoulos, but his weak shot induced a mistake from Lawrence Thomas who allowed the ball to go through his legs and drift helplessly into the back of the net. Aidan Simmons was a Brandon Borrello touch away from serving up the 3rd of the game on a platter. Simmons burned Quispe down the right wing, beat three defenders with a low cross but Borrello at full stretch couldn't get the touch to turn it home. SFC's midfielder Ben Garrucio went down seeking a penalty but he was well outside the box when he tripped and referee Adam Kearsey waved the appeal away. Lawrence Thomas made up somewhat for his earlier error by denying Quispe's curling shot with a full length dive that also parried the ball far enough away that Rhyan Grant couldn't turn in the rebound. The Wanderers should have won a penalty in the 37th minute when Rhyan Grant dragged back Borrello to prevent the striker getting on the end of a deep corner kick. Despite it happening right in front of Kearsey he ignored the foul and let play continue. In the last seconds of the half SFC provoked a melee inside the Wanderers penalty area, a corner kick where Philip Cancar was shoved over by Alex Grant, sparking a set-to between the two sides. The half ended with the 1-1 scoreline despite the frantic action at both ends of the pitch. Aydan Hammond entered the fray after the break with Kosta Barbarouses making way. Like the first half, the second began with a quick goal, but this time for the home side. A corner was fired into the near post and into a mass of players. Lawrence Thomas flapped at the ball with a weak, mistimed punch that bounced into the ground where Marcel Tisserand poked the ball into the goal to put Sydney FC 2-1 up. The home team went 3-1 up not long after, a double deflection from a weak shot by Quintal that went off one defender and then a key touch from Anthony Pantazopoulos who flicked his leg toward the ball and sent it the opposite way to where Thomas was heading. Another deflection benefited Sydney FC, giving them a 4th. It began with a dreadful turnover as Kraev couldn't pick out a team-mate all of 5 meters away, sparking a counter, Akol Akon fell over twice in the build up but got up both times without losing possession, he found Quintal and his shot slammed into Cancar and once again had Thomas wrongfooted. Quispe should have made it 5 after a mix-up at the back from Cancar, he let Quintal get goal-side and away, he raced into the area then cut back to Quispe, the shot skied into the night sky over the bar. With 6 minutes to play Corey Holman smashed a heavy strike that Thomas palmed away with his left hand. The match ended after another melee formed in front of the Wanderers away support, a raft of yellow cards and a free kick that Alex Gersbach shot directly at goal but over the top. The Wanderers next match is against Melbourne City at Parramatta on Saturday the 7th of February with kick-off at 7:35pm.
