Religious Freedom Conditions in Afghanistan 'Still Poor'

An independent US federal government agency reported Wednesday that Afghanistan has experienced a “persistent and significant” decline in religious freedom under the Taliban's Islamist rule. The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) said in its new report that Taliban authorities “continue to suppress and significantly discourage any actions or behavior that is inconsistent with their strict interpretation of Islam.” The Taliban seized power after US-led international forces withdrew from the country in August 2021. Afghanistan's de facto authorities have since implemented an extreme interpretation of Islamic law since returning to rule the country, leading to sweeping restrictions on personal freedoms, as well as restricting Afghan women from participating in most aspects of public life. USCIRF said hardline leaders have silenced religious scholars, prevented minority religious groups from performing religious ceremonies, and continued to restrict the movement and access to education for Afghan women and girls. “Under the Taliban's de facto rule, the use of corporal punishment and the death penalty continued in Afghanistan, to punish offenses deemed to be violations of Sharia (Islamic law).
