UK and Elon Musk at Fault Over Far-Right Riots

London, England — As far-right unrest gripped Britain, tech billionaire Elon Musk appealed to anti-immigration protesters, angering the British government, which blamed social media companies for fueling the unrest. The week-long unrest spread to several cities, linked to online disinformation that the suspect behind the mass stabbing that killed three girls was a Muslim asylum seeker. The war of words between X owner Elon Musk and Prime Minister Keir Starmer's newly elected Labour government began Sunday (August 4), when Musk tweeted that “civil war in the UK is inevitable.” Starmer's spokesman said Monday there was “no justification” for the comments, prompting Musk to respond with a series of posts Tuesday questioning the British leader's response to the unrest. Musk also referred to dubious claims about policing, which have been denied by multiple lawmakers across the political spectrum and police chiefs. “The use of language like 'civil war' is completely unacceptable,” Justice Minister Heidi Alexander said Tuesday, calling Musk's comments “completely irresponsible.” The riots followed the murder on Monday of three girls aged between six and nine at a Taylor Swift-themed dance party in Southport, north-west England.
