Sudan's Warring Parties Ignore International Law

UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif said Tuesday (10/9) that the warring parties in the Sudanese conflict were acting with “complete disregard for international law.” Al-Nashif was speaking at the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva which discussed a range of global issues, including political unrest, the decline of women's rights and freedom of the press and freedom of expression. “Our office is particularly concerned by the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war since the start of the conflict. We have documented 97 incidents involving 172 victims, most of whom are women and girls, which is a very unpleasant reality,” Al-Nashif said. Last week, U.N.-backed human rights investigators called for an “independent and impartial force” to protect civilians in Sudan’s war. They said both sides were guilty of war crimes including killings, mutilations and torture. The investigators also warned that foreign governments that arm and fund the warring parties could be implicated.
