UN Human Rights Chief Calls on Countries to Take Action Against Israeli Occupation

The UN human rights chief said Monday that ending the nearly year-long war on Gaza was a top priority, and urged countries to respond to what he called Israel's “blatant disregard” for international law in the occupied Palestinian territory. Gaza health officials report that nearly 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched a military offensive in response to a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023. The attack claimed 1,200 lives and took 250 hostages. “Ending the war and preventing a wider regional conflict is an absolute and urgent priority,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said in his speech at the opening of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. “States must not, and cannot, allow such blatant disregard for international law, including binding decisions of the UN Security Council and orders of the International Court of Justice, in this or any other situation,” he said. He pointed to a July opinion by the UN's top court that called Israel's occupation illegal and said the situation must be addressed comprehensively. Israel rejected the opinion as one-sided.
