Eskisehir, Türkiye — A masked man wearing a helmet and bulletproof vest stabbed at least five people Monday (Aug. 12) outside a mosque in northwestern Turkey before being detained by police, local media reported. The 18-year-old suspect, armed with a long knife, broadcast his attack in the tea garden of a mosque in the city of Eskisehir live on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, before police arrested him, local media reported. Several news agencies reported seven people were injured. “The attacker was dressed like a person in the game, with an axe at his waist, wearing a bulletproof vest and helmet, his face covered by a mask,” the Eskisehir Durum website reported. Pictures he took of himself show that he was also wearing glasses over the mask he was wearing, completely covering his face. Several news sites claim he also wore a “black sun” shield, a Nazi symbol consisting of several swastikas, on his chest. The attacker did not shout or reveal any motive for his actions, according to the Cumhuriyet daily, which claimed he was “influenced by war games” without providing further details. (lt/ab)
