A former Cornell University student who was arrested for posting a message threatening violence against Jews on campus last fall was sentenced Monday to 21 months in prison. The threat was made after the start of the war in Gaza. Patrick Dai, of suburban Rochester, New York, was charged by federal officials in October with posting anonymous threats to shoot and stab Jews on a Greek Life forum. The threats came during a surge in anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim rhetoric related to the war that has rocked Jewish students on college campuses in New York state. Dai pleaded guilty in April to posting threats to kill or injure others using interstate communications. He was sentenced to 21 months in prison and three years of supervision after release in federal court by Judge Brenda Sannes, according to federal prosecutors. The judge said Dai “substantially disrupted campus activities” and committed a hate crime. But the judge also took into account his autism diagnosis, his mental health struggles and his history of non-violence, according to cnycentral.com.
