The Ukrainian maneuver in Kursk is a distraction tactic

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that the Ukrainian maneuver in the Kursk region is an attempt to distract attention from Moscow's offensive in the Donbas region, in the eastern part of Ukraine, and to improve its position in future negotiations to put an end to the war. Mr. Putin said that Kiev, by attacking the Kursk region in the southwestern part of Russia, may have tried to destabilize daily life in Russia, but failed. He said the number of volunteers joining the Russian military has increased and vowed that Russia will meet its military goals. “Casualties in the ranks of the Ukrainian armed forces are increasing dramatically, including among the most prepared units for war, units that the enemy is sending to our border,” Mr. Putin declared during a media meeting with the most top security and regional governors. “The enemy will receive a well-deserved response and all our objectives will undoubtedly be achieved,” he declared. Most of Russia was largely unaffected by the direct consequences of Russia's attack on Ukraine during the two-and-a-half-year war, but on Monday Russian officials urged more residents from the Kursk region to evacuate because of the “very tense” in that area.
