Ukrainian Troops Continue to Advance in Russia's Kursk Region

Ukraine said its forces had advanced one to two kilometers (1-2 miles) into Russia's Kursk region in its biggest cross-border offensive since early Wednesday, and had cleared Moscow's forces from the Russian city of Sudzha. Kyiv surprised Moscow by deploying thousands of troops to the Kursk region in western Russia last week, giving Ukraine its biggest battlefield gain since 2022 after months of setbacks. In a video posted to his Telegram account, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is seen being briefed by his top commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, via video link. “We continue to advance further in the Kursk region. From one to two kilometers in different areas since the beginning of the day. And more than 100 Russian prisoners of war in the same period,” Zelenskiy wrote in a statement published with the video. Kyiv says it has so far taken control of more than 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) of territory. Syrskiy said the Russian border town of Sudzha was fully under Ukrainian control. “The search and elimination of the enemy in the Sudzha settlement has been completed,” he said in the video.
