UN Questions Strict Restrictions on Women in Afghanistan

Head of the UN Office for Women in Afghanistan, Alison Davidian, delivers a remote briefing from Kabul, to discuss the Afghanistan Gender Profile 2024, on Tuesday (13/8). Davidian said, “Currently, there are no women in Afghanistan who hold leadership positions anywhere and have political influence, either at the national or provincial level. When women are involved in Taliban structures, their role is mostly to monitor other women’s compliance with their discriminatory decisions.” Three years ago, a woman in Afghanistan could technically decide to run for president, she said. Now, women may not even be able to decide when to go out and buy groceries. “The restrictions the Taliban have placed on women and girls will have an impact on future generations,” Davidian said. He said the analysis showed that by 2026, the impact of 1.1 million girls and 100,000 women dropping out of school was correlated with a 45 percent increase in early child birth rates and a 50 percent increase in maternal mortality rates. “The world is watching what is happening to Afghan women and girls.
