Several Russian Military Units Move from Ukraine to Kursk Region

The Pentagon said Thursday (Aug. 15) it saw signs that some Russian military units had been “diverted from their operations in Ukraine to the Kursk region,” as a result of Ukraine’s incursion into the region. Ukraine's surprise attack has turned the war on its head and caused chaos in the Kursk region, leading to the evacuation of more than 120,000 civilians, according to Russian authorities, and the capture of at least 100 Russian soldiers, according to Kyiv. “This is just a preliminary report,” Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said. “I can’t say for certain the numbers or the destinations, but we have seen some movement,” Singh said. Russia had experienced previous attacks on its territory in the war, but the Kursk offensive was notable for its scale, speed, the reported involvement of battle-hardened Ukrainian brigades, and the length of time they were inside Russian territory. As many as 10,000 Ukrainian troops were involved in the operation, according to Western military analysts. Singh said nothing had changed regarding US policy towards Ukraine's use of US weapons in its fight against Moscow.
