Taiwan Hit by Strong Earthquake Again

A magnitude-6.3 earthquake struck about 34 kilometers off the coast of Hualien City in eastern Taiwan on Friday, the region's weather agency said. There were no immediate reports of damage from the island's second major quake in less than a day. The quake also shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. Authorities said subway services in the city were continuing at reduced speeds. “That was close,” said Hsieh Yu Wei, a singer who stopped her car when she received a government-issued earthquake warning while driving on Hualien’s coastal highway. The quake had a depth of 9.7 km, the weather agency said, and came after a 5.7-magnitude quake struck off Taiwan's northeast coast on Thursday (Aug. 15) night. Weather officials have warned of the risk of landslides in mountainous areas after days of heavy rain. Taiwan is located near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. In April, Hualien was hit by the largest earthquake to hit Taiwan in at least 25 years. Nine people were killed and more than 900 injured in the quake. (about/after)
