Biden's Venezuela Remarks Raise Questions About US Policy

President Joe Biden said Thursday (8/15) that he supports new elections in Venezuela, giving a two-word answer to a VOA reporter – “I support” – when asked “do you support new elections in Venezuela?” Brazil's leader has previously called for a rerun of Venezuela's July 28 election, which the White House said was won by opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia. Protests have escalated after President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory, with opposition leaders calling for a mass protest on Saturday. But the U.S. government told VOA hours later that Biden understood VOA's question differently, making it unclear whether that reflected a change in Washington's stance on Venezuela's political crisis.
