Volcano Erupts After 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake in Russia

Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia — One of Russia's most active volcanoes erupted, spewing a five-kilometre plume of ash into the sky over the Kamchatka Peninsula in far eastern Russia and briefly triggering a “code red” warning for aircraft. The Shiveluch volcano began erupting shortly after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Kamchatka on Sunday (Aug. 18), volcanologists from the Russian Academy of Sciences said. They warned that more powerful quakes could be coming. The academy's Institute of Volcanology and Seismology released a video showing an ash cloud over Mount Shiveluch, stretching more than 490 kilometers (300 miles) from the mountain's east to southeast sides. The Ebeko volcano in the Kuril Islands also spewed ash 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) high, the institute said, without saying whether the quake triggered the eruptions. A “code red” ash cloud alert had put all aircraft in the area on alert, according to the Kamchatka Volcano Eruption Response Team. A separate report Sunday carried by the official Tass news agency said no commercial flights were disrupted and there was no damage to aviation infrastructure.
