Sudan Sends Delegation to Cairo to Meet US, Egyptian Mediators

Cairo, Egypt — Sudan's government said it would send a delegation to Cairo for talks with U.S. and Egyptian officials on Monday, keeping open the possibility of its involvement in peace talks to end the African country's 16-month war. Sudan's government, controlled by military forces battling the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for power in the country, said it would not attend peace talks in Switzerland unless a previous agreement reached in Jeddah was implemented. The US-led talks, which RSF will attend, aim to end the war that broke out in April 2023, and address a crippling humanitarian crisis that has left half of Sudan's population of 50 million people facing food shortages. In a statement, the Transitional Sovereign Council said the decision to go to Cairo came after contacts with the US special envoy and the Egyptian government, which is acting as an observer in the talks. The meeting was also limited to discussing the implementation of the Jeddah agreement, under which the RSF is required to leave civilian areas.
