S. Korea, US Begin Annual Drills to Counter N. Korea Cyber, Military Threats

South Korea and the United States kicked off their annual summer military exercises on Monday (Aug. 19), aimed at boosting the two countries' joint readiness to counter North Korean weapons and cyber threats. The Ulchi Shield of Freedom exercise, scheduled to end on August 29, comes as North Korea races to advance its nuclear and missile programs and seeks to launch a surveillance satellite. The drills will reflect “realistic threats” in various areas, including North Korea’s nuclear threat, GPS jamming, cyber attacks and other lessons learned from recent incidents, the militaries of both countries said. South Korea will separately conduct the government-led Ulchi civil defense drill simultaneously, under the scenario of a nuclear attack by North Korea, officials said.
