Bangladesh will maintain support for the country's large Rohingya refugee population and its vital garment trade, Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh's new leader and Nobel laureate, said Sunday in his first major policy speech. Yunus, 84, returned from Europe this month after a student-led revolution in Bangladesh, to take on the mammoth task of steering democratic reforms in a country torn by weak institutions. His predecessor, Sheikh Hasina, 76, suddenly fled the country days earlier by helicopter after 15 years of iron-fisted rule. Yunus, who outlined his priorities before diplomats and UN representatives, vowed to continue the two biggest policy challenges of his interim government. “Our government will continue to support the more than one million Rohingya who have taken shelter in Bangladesh,” Yunus said. “We need continued efforts from the international community for the humanitarian operation of Rohingya and their return to their homeland, Myanmar, with safety, dignity and full rights,” he added.
