Philippine Ship 'Intentionally Collides' with Chinese Vessel in South China Sea

China's Coast Guard said a Philippine ship that repeatedly ignored its warnings “intentionally collided” with a Chinese vessel in an “unprofessional and dangerous” manner in the disputed South China Sea, according to a statement Monday (Aug. 19). A short video of the incident posted on the China Coast Guard's social media showed the collision happening at about 3.24am on Monday and said the Chinese vessel was a coast guard vessel. In a statement, China's maritime security service said the Philippine ship then entered waters near Second Thomas Shoal after being prevented from entering the waters of Sabina Shoal. Two Philippine Coast Guard vessels “illegally intruded” into waters adjacent to Sabina Shoal without permission early Monday, according to Chinese Coast Guard spokesman Gan Yu. “The Philippines has repeatedly provoked and caused trouble, violating the interim agreement between China and the Philippines,” Gan said, referring to the Philippines’ logistics delivery mission to a ship stranded on Second Thomas Shoal. A Philippine Marine Guard spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
