Kremlin Accuses West of Helping Ukraine Attack Russia

A senior adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday accused Western countries and the US-led NATO alliance of being involved in planning Ukraine's surprise attack on Russia's Kursk region. Washington has strongly denied the allegations. The lightning offensive, which began on August 6 when thousands of Ukrainian troops crossed Russia's western border, was a major embarrassment for Putin's military. It was the biggest foreign attack on Russia since World War II. Ukraine said the attack was necessary to force Russia to start “fair” peace talks. However, the United States and Western countries, seeking to avoid direct military confrontation with Russia, say Ukraine did not inform them before carrying out the attack. They also say Washington was not involved. However, weapons provided by Britain and the United States are said to have been used when Ukraine entered Russian territory. Kremlin powerbroker Nikolai Patrushev dismissed Western claims in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.
