China Accuses Philippine Ship of Hitting Its Vessel in Disputed Waters

China's Coast Guard said Sunday (Aug. 25) it took action against a Philippine vessel that ignored warnings and caused a minor collision with its ship in the disputed South China Sea, where confrontations between the two sides have escalated. Gan Yu, a coast guard spokesman, said in a statement that the Philippine vessel entered waters around Sabina Shoal in the Spratly Islands, known in Mandarin as Xianbin Reef in the Nansha Islands. Gan said the Philippine vessel ignored warnings and sailed toward the Chinese coast guard vessel “unprofessionally” and “dangerously,” causing the two vessels to graze each other. He said the Philippine vessel also had journalists on board to take pictures to “distort the facts.” “The responsibility lies entirely with the Philippines. We sternly warn that the Philippines must immediately stop the violation and provocation. Otherwise, they must bear all the consequences,” he said. Gan did not elaborate on what control measures the China Coast Guard had taken. The Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said its vessels encountered aggressive and dangerous maneuvers by eight Chinese maritime vessels.
