California Gov. Gavin Newsom in mid-August sent a letter to all districts in the state urging them to limit smartphone use by students on school grounds. South Carolina took similar action, with the state’s board of education telling all districts to ban cellphone use during school hours. California and South Carolina are following in the footsteps of Utah, Florida and Louisiana, which have sought to limit cellphone use in schools to reduce classroom distractions – and address the impact of social media on the mental health of children and teens. Nathalie Hrizi, a teacher in San Francisco, California, who has two school-age children, welcomed Governor Newsom's decision. “It would be good for the governor to consider the needs of our students and educators in the schools, where cell phones can be a very disruptive distraction. I know this from my own kids, you know, they’re young, they have cell phones, they want to be on them all the time. And it can take away from the classroom experience.
