Odisha, eastern India — India's eastern state of Odisha has culled more than 5,000 chickens that tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of bird flu, a state government official told Reuters news agency on Monday. The epicentre of the outbreak is in Puri district, about 30.5 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar. Recently, 1,800 birds died at a local farm. “Our target is to destroy 20,000 poultry. At the farm location, there are 20,000 poultry but today 10,000 or more will be destroyed,” said Additional Director of Disease Control Dr. Jagannath Nanda. The H5N1 strain is considered highly pathogenic and can also be transmitted to animals such as pigs, horses, cats, dogs and sometimes humans. The spread of this virus is of concern to governments and the poultry industry because of the damage it causes to livestock, potential trade restrictions, and the risk of transmission to humans.
