A Chinese fighter jet violates Japan's airspace

Japan mobilized fighter jets on Monday after a Chinese military aircraft “violated” Japanese airspace, the Defense Ministry said. The Chinese plane “was confirmed to have violated the territorial airspace over the Danjo Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture,” Japan's Defense Ministry said in a statement, adding that it had mobilized “fighter aircraft on an emergency basis.” The Chinese Y-9 reconnaissance data collection aircraft entered Japanese airspace at 11:29 a.m. for about two minutes, the ministry added. Chinese authorities have not commented on the incident. Local media, including public broadcaster NHK, said the incident marked the first time Chinese military aircraft entered Japanese airspace. The defense ministry said steps were taken by the Japanese military such as “issuing warnings” to the planes, but NHK reported that no weapon of any kind was used as a signal of alarm. In response to the incident, Deputy Foreign Minister Masataka Okano summoned China's acting ambassador to Japan late Monday and “presented a strong note of protest.” The official called on China to take measures against a repeat of the incident, Japan's foreign ministry said in a statement.
