Cyberattack Causes Internet Access Loss at Seattle Airport

A cyberattack disrupted internet access, mobile phones, email and other systems at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport for a third straight day on Monday (8/26). The Port of Seattle Authority, the government agency that manages the Seaport and International Airport in Seattle, is currently investigating the cause of the internet access outage and is trying to restore the service so that it can be fully operational again. “We are working around the clock to restore essential services and mitigate the impact on our passengers,” the airport's managing director of aviation, Lance Lyttle, said at a press conference on Sunday (8/25). Lyttle said the airport is investigating with outside experts and working with federal officials, including the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Customs and Border Protection. Officials have not released details about the disruption, but Lyttle said it did not affect TSA officers’ ability to screen passengers. Some airlines, including Delta and Alaska, did not report any service interruptions due to the disruption. Both airlines use Seattle-Tacoma Airport as a hub.
