Sydney — Police said four people including a police officer were injured in a stabbing attack in Sydney early Sunday (Aug 25), the latest in a series of stabbings in Australia's largest city this year. In a statement, police said a man who fled the scene was in custody. New South Wales Police Minister Yasmin Catley said there was currently no ongoing threat to Sydneysiders. Police said they believed there were no fatalities in the attack which followed the crash on the southern outskirts of Engadine. Aerial footage of the scene by the Australian Broadcasting Corp television station showed two cars colliding and marked off by police tape. Sydney, a city of 5 million people, has seen a spate of knife attacks this year, prompting the New South Wales government to tighten knife laws. The state parliament in June passed a law equipping police with electronic metal detectors to check people without warrants at shopping malls, sports venues and public transport stations. In April, six people were killed and 12 others injured in a stabbing attack at a mall in Sydney's Bondi area. (ft)
