UN Fears Repeat of 2017 Rohingya Atrocities

The United Nations (UN) warned Friday (8/23) that similar atrocities against the Rohingya as occurred in 2017 could be repeated. They also expressed deep concern about the humanitarian crisis currently hitting Rakhine State. UN human rights chief Volker Turk expressed deep concern over the sharp deterioration in Myanmar, especially in Rakhine, saying hundreds of civilians were reportedly killed while trying to flee the chaos of fighting. Rakhine has been rocked by a series of clashes since Arakan Army rebels attacked Myanmar's military forces in November, ending a ceasefire that had been in place since a military coup in 2021. Turks blame both sides for abuses against the Rohingya, including extrajudicial killings, kidnappings and arbitrary bombing of towns.
