US Sanctions 400 Companies Accused of Helping Russia's War

The United States (US) imposed new sanctions on Friday (23/8) against more than 400 entities accused of supporting Russia during the war with Ukraine. Announced a day before Ukraine's Independence Day holiday, the sanctions focus on companies in Russia, Europe, Asia and the Middle East accused of helping Russia evade U.S. sanctions and fuel the war in Ukraine, according to a U.S. Treasury Department press release. The Biden administration also added 123 companies to the U.S. export control list, which requires suppliers to obtain permission before shipping goods to listed companies, according to a notice published in the Federal Register. The companies added to Friday’s list include 42 Chinese companies and 63 Russian companies. The US has repeatedly warned Beijing about providing machinery and technology to Moscow that supports Russia's military industrial base and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. China says it is not providing arms to Russia for its war in Ukraine, but defends what it calls normal trade between Beijing and Moscow. The US Treasury Department also warned “foreign regulators and financial institutions” against doing business with branches or subsidiaries of Russian financial institutions abroad, including those not subject to sanctions. “Treasury has a range of tools available …
