Italy accepts EU rules on beach concessions

For years, Italy resisted the rules of the European Union to grant concessions to the country's beaches through open tenders. But after a latest postponement approved by Giorgia Meloni's government until the end of the year, Rome has now run out of options and will be forced to comply with EU rules from early 2025. For nearly two decades, Italy has been in a legal battle with the European Commission over its beach concession practices, while Brussels has accused it of a lack of transparency and violation of competition rules. Italian governments, from left to right, have staunchly resisted EU directives requiring open tenders, continually renewing existing beach concessions. After the latest postponement, approved by the current government of Giorgia Meloni until the end of the year, Rome has now run out of options and will have to comply with EU rules from the beginning of 2025.
