Plastic-Eating Fungus Gives Hope to Marine Pollution Efforts

NEUGLOBSOW, Germany — Scientists in Germany have identified a plastic-eating fungus that could provide a glimmer of hope in tackling the problem of millions of tons of waste polluting the world's oceans every year. But they caution that their work is likely to be just a small part of solving the plastic pollution problem. They add that there is still a need to reduce food packaging and other waste from entering the environment because plastic waste takes decades to break down. An analysis conducted at Lake Stechlin in northeastern Germany explains how microfungi can thrive on some plastics without any other carbon source to feed on. The head of the analysis team explained that it clearly shows that some of them are capable of degrading synthetic polymers. “The most surprising finding of our work… is that our fungus can grow exclusively on several synthetic polymers and even form biomass,” Hans-Peter Grossart, who is head of the research group at the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, told Reuters TV.
