Why is Japan Vulnerable to Seismic Activity and Is It Prepared for a Major Earthquake?

At least three people were injured when a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Japan's southern main island of Kyushu at a depth of about 30 kilometers. The earthquake on Thursday (8/8) was felt most strongly in Nichinan City and surrounding areas in Miyazaki prefecture on Kyushu island. Professor Clive Oppenheimer in the Department of Geography, University of Cambridge has made numerous trips to Japan to study the so-called “Ring of Fire,” a 40,000-km-long tectonic belt of volcanic and seismic activity that encircles much of the Pacific Ocean. He has conducted fieldwork in Kagoshima City, Aso, Miyake Island and Hokkaido to study volcanic activity in the area. “Japan has a ring of volcanoes (ring of fire) and is also where many of the largest earthquakes occur. And that's no coincidence. They're located side by side because this ring defines the boundary of the Pacific Ocean plate,” Oppenheimer said.
