Ex-Philippine KPU Official Faces Bribery Charges in US Over Election

A U.S. federal grand jury in Florida on Thursday (Aug. 8) indicted former Philippine Commission on Elections Chairman Andres Bautista for allegedly accepting bribes from a company that provided voting machines for the country's 2016 elections. In a statement, the US Department of Justice said Andres “Andy” Bautista, 60, faces one count of conspiracy to launder money and three counts of laundering international financial instruments. Three executives from a voting machine provider were also charged for their roles in an “alleged bribery and money laundering scheme to retain and obtain business related to the 2016 Philippine elections,” the statement said. The Justice Department did not name the company, but one of the three executives charged was Roger Alejandro Pinate Martinez, 49, a Venezuelan citizen and Florida resident who is a co-founder of Smartmatic. The indictment said that between 2015 and 2018, Pinate, Jorge Miguel Vasquez, 62, and others “made bribes totaling at least $1 million” to Bautista. Pinate and Vasquez were each charged with one count of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
